318 licensing areas · checked by hand

Licence fee & volume comparison by council

Every licensing authority in the UK sets its own driver, vehicle and operator licence fees, and nobody had put them in one searchable table until now. This covers 318 licensing areas across England, Wales and Scotland, each fee checked one at a time against that council's own published figures and honestly marked where a council doesn't publish one. Vehicle, operator and driver counts come from the Department for Transport's own statistics and cover England and Wales only, so Scottish rows show fees but no counts. Two different kinds of number here

Fees (driver/vehicle/operator licence columns) are hand-checked against each council's own page, PDF, or committee decision — currently 318 licensing areas, covering every licensing authority in England, Wales and Scotland bar five. Those five were checked repeatedly and genuinely skipped rather than filled in with a guess: Doncaster, Ipswich and Wiltshire block automated access or publish only years-stale figures, while South Staffordshire (administered by City of Wolverhampton since 2022) and Eden (now Westmorland and Furness) publish no taxi fee figures anywhere at all. Scotland works differently: councils license under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982, the two vehicle types are taxi and private hire car, and the third licence is a booking office licence rather than an operator licence. Confusingly, many Scottish councils also use the word "operator" to mean the vehicle licence — where that happens the entry says so.

Vehicles/drivers licensed come from a single official source: the Department for Transport's TAXI0113 statistical release, snapshot as at 2024, covering 290 licensing authorities across England and Wales in one go. That's why this table now lists far more councils than have a checked fee yet — the count is real and official even where the fee isn't verified. Scotland isn't in this particular release, so Scottish councils only appear here if a fee was separately sourced.

Spotted a fee that's wrong for your council? Tell me and I'll check it and fix it, usually the same day. That's how this list stays right. taxitoolsuk@gmail.com

Fees change and this list won't always catch it the same day — always confirm the current fee directly with your own licensing authority before budgeting around it. Each row links to where its figures came from.
